Bible Belt by NurIzin Bible Belt by NurIzin
For those who would say that we can't compare religious fanatism, religous fundamentalism and integrism with fascism, then read a bit about Franco's regime in Spain.

South conservatives/republicans and dixiecrats are actually quite similar to European extreme-right wing and fascism on many points as well.
Europeans living in progressive countries, or progressive Europeans, consider extreme religiosity and conservatism as seen in the Bible Belt as fascism, or at least, despise it as much as fascists.
Many extreme-right wing groups (in Europe) are "far-christians", in alliance with neo-fascists and neo-nazis.

We need to send in some Socrates' and da Vincis. Socrates for the foundation and da Vinci to get things headed towards the modern era.

I would say that this comparison is a bit extreme, but then again, if you go to Mississippi or Alabama, you wouldn't be hard pressed to find a cracker who doesn't realize the American Civil War is officially over.

Religion = fascism?  Really?  So those missionaries in Africa and elsewhere are not in fact exposing themselves and consuming their own time and money helping the starving and sick, but must obviously be in fact the people responsible for such.  Am I getting the "logic" right here or am I going to be abused with some very "sophisticated" sophistry?

He's not referring to all religious people, he's referring to those who try to impose their religion on others through various means, aka the Christian right, with it's efforts to limit abortion and the rights of homosexuals.

That still doesn't mean racism, the democratic party during the civil war and reconstruction was pretty staunchly conservative, so using that fallacy is like saying that all Germans are Nazis because of the Nazi Party.

Plus this guy isn't even American.

What a rafinate and sophisticated argumentation.
Well, I suppose it is already great from someone living in an area of archaic education plunged in an obscurantism and religious fanatism worthy Middle-Age.

Religion world-wide is primarily concerned with law and the enforcement of law. There is nothing about explaining the natural world, or being a primitive form of science, or anything else, Religion is plain and simple Fascism.

I would say "organized monotheistic religion" instead, a lot of pre-christian religions weren't as restrictive, moralistic, regulative or what-not.
However, as a student in anthropolgy, I can say that religion is a bit more complex than that, wich doesn't change my dislike of European and American Christianity though (or fundamentalist islam as well, but I prefer to focus on the main religion of the land I live in)

I was only considering modern religion, and primarily the biggest ones. Most people know nothing about and have even less interest in extinct or ancient religion.

I've heard Pennsylvania described as "Philadelphia in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, and Alabama in between." Then again, you go far enough from the cities in any state, you come across parts that resemble Alabama.

There are good folks and bad folks, sure enough. More people were killed in the 20th century in the name of Communism than ever before in the name of religion.

That and my brother wanted to dump my water from Lourdes because he's atheist and thinks I should be atheist too.

And I can't mention God on youtube without being flamed and I'm a fairly liberal Christian.

Now, before your defense mechanisms kick in, go ahead and subsitute Communism with religion, water from Lourdes as mineral water, atheist with Christian, God with atheism, and liberal Christian with conservative atheist.

My point is that you cannot judge entire groups of people and locations. You simply judge individual by individual. And keep in mind majorities often ignore the rights of others. Communists and atheists are no different. Say they are, and you're falling into the trap everyone else does.

Over 260 million were killed in the name of Christianity. Over 500 million have been killed in the name of Islam (this grows by thousands every day). And both of these are merely conservative estimates. I haven't found estimates for other religions or for primitive religions pre-dating writing, agrarian civilization, or even the invention of bread (about 22,000 bce).

And yes I actually have a degree in Anthropology. I have another degree too :)

It sickens me KY is in the Bible Belt when we have a long tradition of keeping to ourselves and letting others be if they aren't hurting you. At least we are focusing more on the meth and pill mill problems than abortion. Which, I have seen what drugs are doing to this state.

You should do some reading about this. It's a common misconception, especially in the USA. From left to right we have: communism, socialism, liberalism, conservatism, fascism. You should read about the nolan chart, the political spectrum, etc. I can supply you with some good links.
